Asheville Brewgrass Festival 2015

September 1st, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

NC Brewgrass Festival 2015Western NC’s original craft beer festival is back for its 19th year – Brewgrass Festival 2015 is scheduled for Saturday, September 19th, will you be there?

Asheville’s Brewgrass Festival was started way back in 1996 when we were all still calling craft beer and craft brewers “microbrew” and “microbrewers.” Now the craze for fresh, innovative, flavorful beer has swept nearly every corner of the US and abroad, making the movement seem more macro than micro and the initiation of the now 19 year-old Brewgrass Festival an act of wisdom bordering on prescience.

Then again, Asheville’s craft beer scene is so fecund – the city is home to over 100 breweries and brewpubs and was named “Beer City USA” four years in a row – it’s no wonder that the NC Brewgrass Festival had such an early start here.

March 21st, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

Carolina Mountain Cheese FestThe first annual Carolina Mountain Cheese Festival in Asheville, NC is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 26th, 2015. Why? Cheese!

As Avery Aames once opined, “Life is great; cheese makes it better.” It’s hard to argue with wisdom that, I mean: I like cheese, you like cheese, he likes cheese, she likes cheese – we all like cheese! (Okay, maybe not everyone likes cheese – we can’t all be perfect).

Biltmore Blooms – Festival of Flowers 2015

March 14th, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

Biltmore Blooms - Festival of Flowers 2015Celebrate spring with a visit to the Biltmore Estate and their incredible garden of Biltmore Blooms – Festival of Flowers 2015!

Each year, on the first day of spring, the Biltmore Estate celebrates the season as their gardens come to life with thousands of bright and beautiful blooming orchids, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, forsythia, azaleas, roses and much more: a rainbow of entrancing pinks and purples, oranges, reds, blues, yellows and whites in a rich sea of green.

The two month long event that is Biltmore Blooms allows for the season’s steady and ever more stunning progression of unfolding colors. Many plan their visits to coincide with the blooms they hold most dear.

It all begins in late March with more than 1,000 orchids being tended to inside the Biltmore Estate’s warm conservatory and winter garden. 15,000 daffodils and forsythia follow in early April, then 75,000 tulips peak a week or so thereafter. By the time May rolls around, the grounds are fully ablaze with color from the blooming of the azaleas, roses, and the rest – truly a spectacular site to behold!

The biggest attraction is the explosion of colors that typically occurs in late April in the Biltmore’s 20-acre azalea garden and among the native and exotic flowers that populate both the natural gardens and border the estate’s extensive walking trails – not to mention the seasonal beauty that is the stunning tulip display in the Walled Garden!

Biltmore Blooms beauty is not restricted to the outside of the estate, either – the garden’s cheery wash of seasonal colors continues inside through a lavish assortment of vividly colored tropical plants and flowers arranged to display among the other wonders that decorate Biltmore House.

Biltmore Blooms – Festival of Flowers is a celebration not only of the season but also the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous American landscape architect who oversaw the development of the Biltmore gardens for the Vanderbilts – among many other high profile projects.
