Folkmoot USA is North Carolina’s Official International Folklore Festival. This 10-day festival – July 20th through the 30th, 2017 -celebrates the world’s cultural heritage through folk music and dance. The festival epicenter is the Folkmoot Friendship Center in Waynesville but includes events in several cities across the mountains of Western North Carolina.
“Folkmoot” is an old English word meaning “a meeting of the people” and that’s what The Folkmoot Festival is all about: cultural exchange. The festival hopes to help build global relationships and foster cultural understanding through a mutual sharing of traditions.
Performers at the Folkmoot Festival demonstrate their cultural heritage through colorful and traditional costumes, dance routines, and music. Each Folkmoot Festival brings in groups from all around the world and the region.
Festival audiences get to see a variety of colorful performances from international groups. They can also meet and mingle with the performers both before and after their performances. Folkmoot is all about the sharing and continuance of cultural traditions in the otherwise fast-paced, modern world.
Performances are scheduled to occur in 2017’s Folkmoot Festival promises groups from India, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Argentina, Russia, Israel, Taiwan, and Wales. Appalachian groups and the Eastern Band of Cherokee will represent our local region.
