Take Your Seat for the 2017 Brevard Music Festival!

May 12th, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

2017 Brevard Music FestivalThe 2017 Brevard Music Festival is almost upon us – and what an amaing festival it is looking to be! 80+ performances during a 10-week span: June 23 through August 6, 2017.

Brevard Music Center has been in the business of training fine musicians or more than 80 years. The legendary summer music program and festival brings these talented young people together, on stage, with some of the most celebrated classical musical artists in the world. The Brevard Music Festival has seen the likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Joshua Bell grace its stage with students. Not to mention the future greats that play here as of yet unrecognized!

The Brevard Music Festival includes symphonies, operas, and chamber music – but that’s not all! You’ll also hear pop, jazz, country, bluegrass, and folk music. In fact, one of this year’s featured guests is bluegrass legend, Ricky Skaggs! While the Brevard Music Festival tends to be thought of as more of a classical venue, it is actually fairly broad in scope.

The 80th anniversary of the Brevard Music Festival coincides with the 10th anniversary of the festival’s artistic director, Keith Lockhart. You may recognize Lockhart as the Principal Conductor of the Boston Pops and/or the BBC Concert Orchestra. he also happens to be a
Brevard Music Center alumnus!

Internationally-acclaimed artists scheduled to appear this year are many. The Brevard stage will see Lee Ann Womack, Garrick Ohlsson, Sarah Chang, Johannes Moser, and Ruth Moody. We already mentioned Ricky Scaggs, above.

Program highlights include the Kurt Weill Festival, which runs the entire season. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” also comes to the Brevard stage and presented in Concert with a live symphony. Sure to be a big hit.

Other season highlights include Street Scene, Don Pasquale, The Marriage of Figaro, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Verdi’s Requiem. You’ll also want to take a close look at the series of Faculty and Student Spotlights.

Even if you miss these “highlights,” there are no stinkers on the Brevard stage. Virtually every one of the more than 80 orchestra, chamber and opera performances scheduled to appear is a “don’t-miss.”

Further, a trip to Brevard Music Center is a pleasure in and of itself. The campus in ludes more than 145 buildings on 140 beautiful, Blue Ridge Mountain acres. There are plenty of wonderful spots to sit and quietly take it all in or enjoy a picnic lunch. You don’t even have to bring your own picnic basket! Both the Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium and The Porter Center offer concessions – and by “concessions” I mean things like craft beer and Kiwi Gelato. Wow!
