The Montford Music and Arts Festival, held the third Saturday of every May, is a free, annual, neighborhood block party held in the historic Montford neighborhood, near downtown Asheville, featuring music, art and food.
Asheville’s largest, longest running, single day neighborhood street festival, the Montford Music and Arts Festival has been a local favorite for 13 years. The festival’s reputation and scope have grown over the years and it now draws crowds of 7,000 people or more, from both inside and outside Asheville – and who can wonder why?
Located just north of downtown Asheville, North Carolina, the Montford neighborhood is an eclectic collection of historic buildings and artistic expression. A good chunk of the neighborhood – 600+ buildings, mostly residences – was built between 1890 and 1920 and features a variety of architectural influences: Victorian, Queen Anne, and Arts and Crafts styles meshed with Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, and even castle-like motifs.
This stunning and complex mix of architectural styles reflects the cosmopolitan character of Asheville during the turn of the 20th century and the neighborhood has attracted many great entertainers over the years – and it is from these combined factors that the original Montford Music and Arts Festival sprang.
Stretching from Chestnut St. to Waneta St., the oak-lined streets of the Montford Music and Arts Festival will feature 20 acts performing continuously throughout the event from 2 different stages – and every musician has ties to the neighborhood!
The “art” of the Montford Music and Arts Festival is produced by local and regional artists and craftspeople, many of whom return every year. Pieces displayed in the special, juried artists exhibition area will amaze and delight you with their creativity, and fine beauty.
And the food! Montford Music and Arts Festival could easily be called “A Taste of Asheville!” Beloved, local and regional food trucks have their own area at the festival, and other food and drink vendors will be on hand throughout the festival, as well. You will NOT go hungry at this event!
Did I mention admission to the event is … free? What are you waiting for?
