November 9th, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

what to do during your Asheville Holiday getawayThere’s always something fun to do in the Asheville area and the options only increase once the holidays roll around. If you’re looking for what there is to do during your Asheville holiday getaway, read on!

You don’t have to range far and wide to find fun things to do during Asheville holiday vacation. The festivities are everywhere, starting before Thanksgiving and not ending until well after New Year’s Day! We’ve compiled a short list of just a few of the more popular Asheville holiday attractions.

Downtown Asheville, itself, provides a great number of wonderful holiday distractions, with shops, museums, restaurants, galleries, pubs and don’t forget the Grove Arcade’s Winter Wonderland (through Jan 2nd)! Gaily decorated for the holidays, downtown Asheville holiday shopping opportunities, street performers, carolers, and festivals will help to keep you in the holiday spirit!

Christmas at the Biltmore and Biltmore Village
The Biltmore House decorated for the holidays, Nov 6th through Jan 10, is both extravagant and magical, with dozens of elaborately decorated Christmas trees, thousands of poinsettias, lights, live music and more. Biltmore Village’s tree-lined streets with their numerous shops and eateries top provide many days worth of Asheville holiday distraction and entertainment.

Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum
You’ve not seen light displays like the North Carolina Arboretum Winter Lights display, up from Nov 20 to Jan 2: talk a walk through a winter wonderland of light displays in the Arboretum gardens, especially designed to compliment the vegetation.

The National Gingerbread House Competition
You’ve never seen gingerbread houses like the ones entered for competition at the National Gingerbread House Competition, Nov 18 – Jan 3. The level of talent, beauty, and detail displayed in these entirely edible creations will stun and delight you – an Asheville holiday tradition!

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad’s Polar Express Train
Not just for kids! The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad’s Polar Express Train is fun for all ages, with more than 70,000 passengers riding last year! Nov 13 – January 3

Smith-McDowell House Victorian Christmas
Step back in time to a Victorian era Asheville holiday at the Smith-McDowell House Victorian Christmas, Nov 18 – Jan 3. Explore opulent period rooms, history exhibits and grounds decorated for Christmas and enlivened with carols, stories, and live music.

We’ve barely scratched the surface of all an Asheville holiday getaway can be – we didn’t even get to all the great Asheville holiday events and opportunities for winter sports, much less the full list of holiday attractions in the area.

We would be remiss, however, if we didn’t mention the easiest way to make sure your Asheville holiday getaway is the best it can be – and that’s with a stay at North Lodge On Oakland, a premier Asheville bed & breakfast. Our hearty breakfasts and luxurious amenities make any stay a gift, itself. Book your lodging now, before they’re all gone – and Happy Holidays from all of us to all of you!
