6th Annual Flock To The Rock – September 20, 2014 – September 21, 2014

August 16th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Flock to the Rock 2014Attention Birders and Nature Lovers! One of the great, fall migration birding events is about to take place at Chimney Rock State Park, September 20th and 21st: Flock to the Rock!

Last post I told you about Chimney Rock State Park, which was serendipitous with Flock to the Rock just around the corner. Chimney Rock State Park is home to over 130 species of birds throughout the year, including warblers, vireos, tanagers, woodpeckers, thrushes, owls, and various birds of prey, including the majestic Peregrine Falcon.

Flock To The Rock is scheduled to coincide with the annual hawk migration. During this amazing, natural event, hundreds of hawks can often be seen on their flight south. If not hundreds, dozens – an amazing sight none the less.

But Flock To The Rock is not just migrating hawks. Chimney Rock State Park is a natural haven for birds both resident to and migrating through North Carolina. Consequently, Flock to the Rock’s weekend of birding activities includes guided bird walks, live birds of prey programs with a Red-tailed Hawk and a Great Horned Owl, a range of avian workshops including bird photography and tips on backyard feeding, nature walks, activities for kids, and lots more.

Another treat is the return of the Peregrine Falcon to North Carolina skies! Peregrine Falcon populations nose-dived in the mid-20th Century due to DDT and habitat loss but a successful restoration/relocation program has them back in the air – and Chimney Rock State Park is a favorite hang out for them. Aim your binoculars along Chimney Rock’s cliffs for a chance to see these incredible animals slicing through the air at more than 60 mph – or diving for prey at up to 200 mph!

Flock To The Rock is a prime birding weekend that illuminates one of the most beautiful spots along the North Carolina Birding Trail. Come see the birds in their natural habitat, learn about them from local ornithologists, and enjoy a wonderful weekend in the great outdoors at one of North Carolina’s most beautiful and iconic state parks.
