It sometimes seems like there is an endless supply of waterfalls to visit in the Asheville area. Some are near and some are far, some are big and some are small. The one thing they have in common is their beauty to the human eye.

Why we love falling water is anyone’s guess but waterfalls tend to entrance and attract us all. This can be particularly true during the colder months when the water freezes, leaving strange and incredible sculptures of ice.

The New Year’s Day, Lake Lure Polar Plunge has been an annual event for nearly a decade, now and they still haven’t run out of people willing to dip jog heedless of discomfort into the chilly waters of North Carolina’s Lake Lure – and it’s a good thing, too because it’s all for a good cause: proceeds from the event go towards local charities: this year to Lake Lure Fire and Rescue and other first responders.
