Ski Areas Near AshevilleLooking for ski areas near Asheville? While it’s true Asheville winters tend to be mild, there are some great places nearby to ski, snowboard, or tube in western North Carolina, where temperatures often run up to 20 degrees cooler!

For the outdoor enthusiast, winter often brings to mind downhill skiing or cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing, ice-skating and sledding. Though the Asheville area isn’t exactly a snow-sports mecca, we’re not so far away from some really wonderful North Carolina ski areas. We do have the highest mountains in the eastern US, after all!

Ski Areas Near Asheville

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort – .75 hrs away

Only 45 minutes from North Lodge on Oakland, Wolf Ridge provides unmatched views, well-groomed slopes, 22 runs with 5 ski lifts, and 82 acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain to explore.

Cataloochee Ski Area – 1 hr away

Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains Cataloochee Ski Area is a winter playground offers 18 runs – steeper runs on the Upper Omigosh for seasoned skiers and boarders, smoother, more gentle slopes down below for those less practiced, and two terrain parks with jumps and bumps for snowboarders and skiers alike.

Sapphire Valley Ski Area – 1.5 hrs away

Sapphire Valley Ski Area boasts a 1600 foot main run featuring a vertical drop of 200 feet. A state-of-the-art quad-lift, learning center slope, multiple lane tube park, and zip lines round out the fun.

Sugar Mountain Resort – 1.5 hrs away

Sugar Mountain offers 21 slopes with 125 acres of skiable terrain and 6 lifts. 15 slopes are lit for night skiing and snowboarding. Tubing, ice skating, and snowshoeing, dining, and shopping are also on tap.

Hawksnest Snow Tubing – 1.75 hrs away

Okay, so it’s tubing and not skiing – but have you ever been to an area designed specifically for snow tubing? Talk about fun! Hawksnest is North Carolina’s largest snow tubing park with 4 different areas offering 20 lanes 400 to 1000 feet long. 2 moving carpet lifts, a coffee bar, and Carolina BBQ and pizza to recharge you!

Beech Mountain Ski Resort – 2 hrs away

Beech Mountain is one of the most popular ski areas near Asheville – probably because it’s the highest one in the eastern US! 95 acres with 15 slopes and plenty of runs for every skill level. Beech Mountain sports a vertical drop of 830 feet and receives more than 80 inches of snow annually. Did we mention the Mountaintop bar?
