The Orange Peel (“Social Aid and Pleasure Club” taken from the New Orleans tradition of member-only care, comfort, and entertainment organizations) has blazed a bright trail since it opened its doors in 2002 – or should I say re-opened?
Located in a building that was once a popular Asheville roller rink and has housed numerous other musical venues over the years, including a club in the 1970’s that was known as “The Original Orange Peel,” the current Orange Peel is a dog of a different stripe. It garnered international notice and nods in numerous entertainment magazines as one of the best live music venues in the country almost from the very first day it opened!
With a reputation like that, you can bet that The Orange Peel attracts some of the biggest acts out there – and it does, hosting a bright array of stars like Bob Dylan, The Flaming Lips, Jack White, Blondie, Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Joan Jett, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Ice Cube, The Killers, Macklemore, Skrillex, Modest Mouse, and the Beastie Boys.
The Orange Peel hosts national music acts of all genres and features a house capacity of 1,100 standing plus PULP, the 75-person private club located in the building’s lower level. PULP is an alternate venue for The Orange Peel with a full bar and a high definition TV showing a live feed of shows as they happen upstairs on the main stage.
So the next time you’re planning on being in the Asheville area, be sure to check out the schedule for The Orange Peel Social Aid and Pleasure Club – you never know who is going to be on stage!
