The 2014 Mountain Dance and Folk Festival

July 19th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

2014 Mountain Dance and Folk FestivalLast time around, we told you about Asheville’s 48th Annual Shindig On The Green. Now it’s time to talk about the 2014 Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, from whence Shindig On The Green sprang from.

Asheville’s 87th annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival is scheduled for July 31st through August 2nd and promises to bring a host of mountain fiddlers, banjo pickers, dulcimer sweepers, cloggers, and balladeers to the area once again.

A world famous event, the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival – the first folk festival! – was started in 1928 by Bascom Lamar Lunsford who wanted to share the beauty and dignity he saw in the Southern Appalachian music and dance traditions that have been handed down, generation after generation, in western North Carolina.

The 2014 Mountain Dance and Folk Festival is set to take place at the Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place in downtown Asheville beginning each evening of the festival at 7pm – below is the full list of the scheduled performances.
